Lackawanna Court of Common Pleas

The Lackawanna Common Courts in Scranton, PA hired The Palumbo Group architects to undertake a renovation of their historic primary Lackawanna Court Building. AVL Designs Inc. was contract by Palumbo to provide acoustical consulting for the many courtrooms, judges’ chambers, and hearing rooms included in the project. The project also involved adding much needed air conditioning with chillers in public spaces outside the main building. This is a central square area so noise control was a concern. AVL Designs Inc. performed acoustic surveys of the existing conditions and provided recommendations for upgrades to many aspects of the spaces. Our goal was to improve privacy, speech intelligibility in the courts and minimize reverberation in the spaces. It was very important that all work incorporate the look and feel of the historic spaces, which required use of perforated woods and other measures to control the spaces. AVL Designs Inc. also provided ductwork noise modeling to verify noise levels in the courtrooms would be low. The final results were stunning and their courts have well-functioning, beautiful courtrooms.
