Chautauqua Institution – Sherwood Hall

The purpose of the renovation of Sherwood Hall at Chautauqua Institution was to develop spaces primarily for piano rehearsal and piano recital. This required a combination of isolation as well as interior acoustic treatments to optimize the sound of the various pianos and spaces. While the ceiling appears to be relatively continuous within the recital space, the panels are actually different types used to absorb different sound frequencies. The wall panels are a variety of thicknesses and various frequency ranges to optimize the sound for a grand piano, which has an extremely wide frequency range and dynamic range. The individual rehearsal spaces were treated similarly. You will note various wall panels and arrangements designed to diffuse and absorb sound to create a balanced rehearsal space for each instrumentalist. Sherwood Hall was done as part of a larger series of renovations and new spaces that AVL Designs Inc. was involved in and it was a great success.
